Encode and decode HTML entities

Converts characters that have a special meaning in HTML into safe entities – or turns entities like ä back into readable text.

What you enter is processed in this browser only and is not transmitted.

How it works

 1. Paste your text or HTML.
 2. Choose “Encode” or “Decode” and, when encoding, the scope.
 3. Click “Convert” and copy the result.

Notes and limitations

 • “Encode” always converts & < > " and ' – enough to show text safely in HTML.
 • “All non-ASCII characters” additionally writes umlauts, emoji etc. as numeric entities (ä) – useful for systems without UTF-8.
 • Decoding recognises all named HTML entities (e.g. €) and numeric ones.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to encode umlauts?

Not on modern websites with UTF-8 – only the five special characters must be encoded.
